How to become a Model?

Becoming a Model involves several important steps of preparation, and persistence.

Check if You Fit in the Industry: Assess your physical attributes, including height, body measurements and facial features. While Modeling industry can have certain exceptions and people can have different requirements, it still has quite strict standards which many people follow while selecting Models;

Practice: Practice posing, expressions and rampwalk in front of a mirror to become comfortable and confident in chosen profession. Consider taking Modeling classes or workshops to improve your skills and learn from experienced professionals, if required;

Make Polaroids: Polaroids are images showing how you look naturally, without professional make up and retouching used in portfolio images. They can be used to send to Modeling Agencies and Clients, including the situations when you can’t go to castings such as work in different cities or international contracts. Polaroids are an absolute must-have and you have to update them every once a while to show your recent look;

Decide on Suitable Work Mode: Decide if you want to work with an Agency or become a freelance Model. It might be easier and more safe to start with an Agency. They will help you in initial stages of your career, they will have their network of Clients and will coordinate with them for your work. But, of course, they will charge their commission. Research reputable Modeling Agencies in your area or the area you wish to work in. If you decide on freelance mode of work – contact as many Photographers, Photography Studios, Designers and Brands as possible;

Build Your Portfolio: Compile a collection of professional photos showcasing your versatility and range. Include headshots, full-body shots and images that highlight your potential as a Model. Keep updating it with images from professional photoshoots and fashion shows after you start working;

Create an Online Presence: Set up social media profiles to share your work, portfolio, behind the scene images. Connect with other professionals and gain exposure. In today’s world online presence is very important and it can help you get work;

Attend Castings: Some Agencies can call you for a casting before they sign a contract with you. Many times they will send you for castings for future assignments as well. Castings provide an opportunity to showcase your look and personality. In fact, you may miss opportunities to get some assignments if you don’t attend castings;

Stay Professional: Maintain a professional and positive attitude. Modeling is a collaborative field and being easy to work with is important. Be punctual and productive. Maintain your looks and don’t change them drastically, especially without informing people you work with so it won’t become a huge surprise on some assignment;

Be Prepared for Rejection: Rejection is extremely common part of the industry. Don’t get discouraged by setbacks and keep pursuing opportunities. Remember that these rejections are often about the specific idea of the Model image Brands have in minds, nothing personal;

Stay Safe: Be cautious when communicating with strangers online and prioritize safety – some people can only pretend to be representatives of this industry and try to manipulate you into doing something that profession doesn’t require you to do. Research people and companies you plan to work with, analyze if their communication and requirements are professional;

Keep Improving: Stay updated on industry trends. This will help you adapt and stay relevant. Continue working on your skills and appearance. Stay committed to personal growth and improvement;

Don’t Idealize the Industry: Keep in mind that success in Modeling is not guaranteed for everyone. It’s a highly competitive field. Remember that the path to becoming a Model can vary based on your location and your personal circumstances. It’s important to stay patient, maintain a strong work ethic and be prepared to adapt to changes in the industry.
